Fasting in the Bible:
When we fast, we willing deprive our bodies of nourishment and the pleasure inducing chemicals that the body produces
when we eat. With biblical fasting, unlike just dieting/fasting, we read the bible, we pray and we focus our mind and emotions
on God while we abstain from food. We acknowledge that God is our full source of strength, our source of nourishment,
our source of pleasure, our relief from stress, or source of rest and every other emotional and physical reward we
associate with eating.
When we do this God promises that
• Our light shall break forth like the morning.
• Our healing shall spring forth speedily.
• Our righteousness shall go before us.
• The glory of the LORD shall be our rear guard.
• When we call, and the LORD will answer; when we cry, He will say, '“Here I am.”
• The LORD will guide us continually.
• He will satisfy our souls in drought.
• He will strengthen our bodies.
• We shall be like a watered garden and like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.
• Those from among us shall build the old waste places.
• We shall raise up the foundations of many generations.
• The apostles fasted and God gave them directions and instructions – Acts 13: 2-3
• Those who had done wrong fasted and received mercy from the
consequences of their deeds – 1 Kings 21:29, Jonas 3:10.
• Jesus fasted before beginning his ministry: Matt4: 1- 11
• Anna fasted for the redemption of Jerusalem through the coming Messiah: Luke 2:37.
• Cornelius fasted and sought God’s plan of salvation: Acts 10:30.
• Paul fasted 14 days while at sea on a sinking ship: Acts 27:33-34.
Fasting warnings:
Before fasting, you must, of course, consult your own doctor about the effect fasting may have
on you, giving your unique health issues. All information below is generalized.
Many doctors warn that it doesn’t matter what meds you are on, diabetics should never from
food for more than 12 hours. If you are on Glucophage/Metformin, or Insulin, it must be taken
with food. If you neglect to take your med, your body will think you are starving and your liver
will begin dumping stored glucose in your system resulting in high glucose levels Ultimately, the
most important advice is to fast smart. Test yourself frequently during the day, and stop the fast
immediately if your BG levels exceed 300 mg/dl or drop lower than 70 mg/dl.
People with Hypertension should also be aware that fasting has been shown to lower blood
pressure. If your meds specify that it should be taken with food, then do so. Otherwise, you
must test yourself frequently to ensure that your BP does not decrease to dangerous levels.
